Celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a Royal Tea and Paint Party on Canada Day!

The Platinum Jubilee Canadian celebrations have officially started, and the Porcupine Art Club is planning its own event here in Timmins. It has been made possible by funding received from Canadian Heritage, to honor the occasion.

The Roy Nicholson Clubhouse, on the corner of Pine and Eighth, will be open between 12pm and 4pm on July 1, 2022.

Members of the public are invited to drop-in during the afternoon to enjoy art demonstrations and an exhibition of recent work.

Paint and brushes will be provided to visitors who wish to contribute to the Community Mosaic Mural. In commemoration of the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, seventy canvases (each measuring 6×6 inches) have been prepared with outlines and colour reference. Once complete, they will be assembled to form a mural measuring 5 x 3.5 feet. The artwork will be included in the PAC’s upcoming exhibition (Honouring the Past) which is scheduled to take place at the Timmins Museum: NEC later in the year.

Planning also includes local musicians and members of the Take Two Theatre group, who will provide additional entertainment during the afternoon.

Coffee, tea, and cookies will be served, and all participation is FREE!

PAC Spring Project At-Home: Community Butterfly Boxes

EACOM Timber Corporation is supporting the construction of new houses for local butterflies and tree swallows through a partnership between the Wintergreen Fund for Conservation and two local schools: Timmins High and Vocational School (swallow houses), and O’Gorman Intermediate Catholic School (butterfly houses).

O’Gorman Intermediate Catholic School’s Industrial Technology program students constructed a number of butterfly houses. The Porcupine Art Club was then asked to decorate the houses, which would then be placed in community gardens around Timmins. Several club members took the boxes home to work on – some with the help of family members. The boxes were then returned to the Wintergreen Fund’s office where they await to go on display.

PAC Workshop Co-ordinator Nicola Alexander created a video slide show with photography by President Ted O’Connor. Enjoy everyone’s unique take from a common canvas!

Artists’ boxes in order of appearance: Ted O’Connor, Catharine and Katy Cribbs, Ingrid Huisson, Lynn Pigeon, Tammy Racicot, Karina Miki Douglas-Takayesu, Sherri Jones, Tammy Racicot, Maggie Jasaitis, Sandy Beauchamp, Hugo and Nicky Alexander, and Silvana Jasaitis.

You can read more about the project in this article from The Daily Press: https://www.timminspress.com/news/local-news/butterflies-swallows-will-benefit

Look for twenty-two pieces from “Flower Power” to be featured in the Timmins Symphony Orchestra and Chorus’ online concert in June, where they will accompany several flowered-themed compositions curated by Music Director and Conductor, Josh Wood.

Northern Impressions 2.0 Virtual Show

Seven artists from Timmins – and coincidentally all of them are members of the Porcupine Art Club – entered Northern Impressions 2.0, along with 9 other regional artists.

Unfortunately, the current provincial emergency order has closed museums across Ontario. However, you can still enjoy the show virtually with a slide show created by museum staff, which is on the Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre’s Facebook page.

The link to view the virtual exhibit is below the Northern Impressions 2.0 graphic. You do not need to have a Facebook account to access it.
