Who are we?
Founded over 75 years ago, we are a group of artists, both experienced and novice, who share a love of creating art. Members come and go but the artists who are interested remain with a sincere desire to improve and ambition to succeed. Some of our members are actively pursuing a career in art, holding exhibitions, entering competitions in other centres with great success, and instructing in their chosen art form. Many of our members are adept at working with several mediums or processes including paints (such as watercolours, acrylics, oils, gouache, and egg tempera), pastel, various printing methods, sculpture, pottery, batik, and many more.
What benefits would I have as a member of the Porcupine Art Club?
You would have 24/7 access to the club studio space, after attending 3 business meetings and paying a deposit of $3.00 for a key. Your membership allows you access to free artist workshops. We also have outings and workshops just for members. The PAC has events going on each week.
Members have a biannual show that is exhibited in the Timmins Museum.
You may put your artwork for sale in the Summer Sundays “Open Studio” and in events such as the annual “Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre Holiday Art and Craft Sale”. We also have an ongoing exhibit of small works from the members, at the Timmins Public Library.
You are automatically included in membership to the NOAA (Northern Ontario Artist Association) and eligible to enter their annual juried competition. Also, the NOAA provides a website to advertise your art for sale and for others to view your work on-line.
Join in the workshops held at the clubhouse and member outings to other clubs in the area. Visits to other clubs let us collect reference photos for future paintings and allow us to sketch from life. We visit clubs like the Timmins Symphony Orchestra rehearsals.
The PAC’s website would give you a webpage to display your work, or a link to your own website. If you are on Facebook, you will also be enrolled in the Porcupine Art Club Members group.
Join in the community improvement projects that the PAC is involved with. Paint murals, help students create art for the community through schools. The PAC is involved with the City of Timmins and the Timmins Museum: National Exhibition. We are always looking for ways to support our community through art. In 2017, we painted a mural for the children’s section of the C.M. Shields Centennial Library in South Porcupine for its 50th Anniversary, and our latest involvement is painting “Grand Book Boxes”, a set of self-serve library boxes in the community, initiated in 2017.
We have club business meetings at 7:00pm on the second Thursday each month, from Sept. to June, and membership allows you to vote on current issues and the future of the PAC.
We also provide a club mentor, for new members, to answer any questions that you may have during the course of the first year.
.
Where is the art club located?
The Porcupine Art Club is located in the Roy Nicholson Park on the corner of Eighth Ave. and Pine St. N. in Timmins. Just knock on the door facing Eighth Ave. if someone is expecting you.
How much does it cost to join?
Membership is $50.00 for the year, starting the first business meeting in September, and include membership into the PAC and the Northern Ontario Artist Association. Membership fees for the current year are due by the December business meeting.
Extra fees that may arise if you choose to use them: $25. to enter the NOAA annual juried competition each June. Cost of printing (if you choose to print cards with the group), a small charge for extra images used on the NOAA website (the PAC website is always free), and entry cost to workshops held by Visiting Artists or any special workshops. Most PAC workshops are free to members. Any of these costs are voluntary and would be discussed beforehand at business meetings and posted on this site.
Meetings are the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Interim meetings may be called for more discussions.
What would be expected of me?
All members are expected to attend meetings and involve themselves in the activities that promote the group. In order to exhibit in our shows and the NOAA, you must attend three business meetings per year – this rule is waived for new members in their first year.
We do not expect newcomers take on numerous responsibilities. We only ask that you come to the meetings, try to get involved and be active in the arts. The more you attend, the more comfortable you will feel.
Adherence to the Rules of the PAC.
Compliance with deadlines and procedures, if you enter a show.
Willingness to share your expertise with other members.
Who can join the Porcupine Art Club?
You must be 18 years of age and interested in pursuing or sponsoring art in the Timmins/Porcupine area.
